I don't think source code is an option. There are lots of freeware programs around that are not open source either. My AMC firmware is one of them. There are lots of reasons why one wants his personal work private. And I know that my code was already dissembled and analysed, but it doesn't matter to me. I can accept this reality.
Also I want to add that x-sim software cannot get commercial because of the used freeware SDK's. The only way to get money and sustain the development is with the prebuilded hardware and donations.
As I said before, the keys are there to protect from broad commercial use of it, as if it is let free, some commercial company will grab it and use it in his monster huge simulator, and if anyone gets hurt, the software developer can be blamed as well.
Tying the keys to certain hardware has no effect to home users, as they don't change their game computers so often. If there is a need, a replacement key will be given. And must remind you again, the key is for the extra features and they are not related to the motion control of the simulator.
Best Regards,
